‘Coldest Night of the Year’ raises funds to fight homelessness in Waterloo

Today is the ‘Coldest Night of the Year’, a family-friendly walk to raise funds for local charities supporting people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.

Since 2011, the event has raised over $75 million across the country in nearly 200 communities.

The Waterloo edition of the walk is hosted by Supportive Housing of Waterloo and has 207 walkers signed up making up 34 teams.

“When it’s the winter, you can see the suffering in people’s eyes,” said Brian Paul, executive director of Supportive Housing of Waterloo. “It hits home a lot more. Having this event happen at this time of the year, it makes a lot of sense for us.”

Walkers will set off from the First United Church on William Street West in Waterloo at 5 p.m. and walk either 5km or 2km.

As of Feb. 23, the local walk has raised over $71,000.
