SIU clears WRPS officer after Cambridge man suffers broken ribs during arrest

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) found that a Waterloo Regional Police (WRPS) officer did not commit a crime during an arrest in June 2023.

A 31-year-old man from Cambridge was arrested as he was attempting a break-in at a residence in the area of Avenue Road and Elgin Street North.

The man resisted and officers struck the man and used conducted energy weapon discharges.

In July 2023, the man was arrested again. It was at that time that he shared that his ribs were broken during the June arrest and the SIU invoked its mandate.

The report noted that the woman who called police in June exaggerated her claim about the man breaking into the home. The 31-year-old was able to prove that he lived in the residence. A video was posted to TikTok that showed the interaction.

SIU Director Joseph Martino found the man likely suffered his injuries during the June arrest, however, he found it was not due to unlawful activity from WRPS officers.
