$7 million in federal funding announced for affordable housing in Woolwich and Oxford

More affordable housing is on the way for seniors in the Waterloo Region and surrounding areas thanks to federal and regional funding.

On Friday, the federal government announced over $7 million in funding going towards the construction of 58 homes for seniors through projects in Woolwich and Oxford.

The announcement was made in St. Jacobs at Sprucelawn apartments, where they will be adding 28 new homes for seniors, with priority being given to single senior women.

The second project was announced for Plattsville and includes 30 homes for seniors that are accessible and energy efficient, according to the CMHC. Three of those units will be dedicated to women fleeing domestic violence.

Karen Redman, regional chair of Waterloo Region, was at the announcement, and said the region is working to address ‘the urgent need for affordable housing options for older adults in the rural communities they call home.’
