A memorial ‘ghost ride’ cancelled on Thursday due to the weather has been rescheduled for Sunday.
The ride is meant to honour the life of a 66-year-old that was killed earlier this month after being struck by an SUV on Victoria St. North.
The practice of the “ghost bike” is to take an old bicycle, paint it white and chain it to a post near the site where a person was killed. It is meant to be seen as a memorial and to raise awareness for road and bicycle safety.
Janice Jim, the vice president of CycleWR, said some cities, like Waterloo and Kitchener, are doing well when it comes to safe bicycle infrastructure, but more can be done.
She said there are spots in the region that are problematic, such as the multi-use trails on Victoria St in Kitchener.
“Drivers coming in and out of the strip mall businesses turn without looking,” she said. “At Victoria, it happens all the time. People are trying to come out of their driveway and they’re only looking for the cars, not the pedestrians and cyclists.”
Riders will begin at Kitchener City Hall and will ride to the intersection on Victoria St North between Frederick Street and Forfar Avenue.
