Cold air to dominate Waterloo Region this week

Waterloo Region is going to need more layers this week, as the coldest air of the season has arrived.

Temperature highs are expected to be around -11 to -12 degrees until Wednesday, and lows around -16 to -17 degrees. The wind will make it feel a lot colder, making it feel well below -20.

CityNews weather specialist Denise Andreacchi said this cold weather is going to be consistent this week, but it will not hit cold warning criteria for Southern Ontario.

“It’s still dangerously cold,” said Andreacchi. “With that wind chill, it’s going to be feeling like the -20s for the next several days.”

By Thursday, the temperatures are expected to be more bearable with the winds easing up, bringing a high of -8.

The region has not declared an extreme cold warning, which happens if the temperature drops below -30 for more than two hours.

Warming centres are available in all cities and towns in the region, including all regional libraries, community centres and public buildings.
