MTO still studying Hwy. 6 intersection in Fergus

By Justine Fraser

A busy intersection along Highway 6 in Fergus is known to be hazardous to drivers, often causing its fair share of collisions.

Cox Creek Cellars sits right at the corner of the intersection at Wellington Road 22 and Eighth Line. The owner, Adrian Trochta, spoke on The Mike Farwell Show Monday about the need for traffic lights or a roundabout to be installed to avoid future incidents.

Trochta said Highway 6 improvements were made a few years after they moved into their current location in 1990. The improvements turned the road into three lanes, increasing the width of the highway.

“Ever since then there’s been multiple, different situations that have come up. Everything from pretty major accidents that have taken place, all the way up to near misses and some fender benders,” said Trochta. “The sheer width of the highway increased, and that bit of extra space was a little more challenging to navigate as people were trying to cross the highway.”

Trochta wants the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to develop a plan for the intersection. It’s something that the MTO has said they were going to fix.

“It doesn’t really matter what it is, even if it is just a set of signs or some warning lights, something like that, anything to bring more attention to that intersection as drivers are going through there is a positive,” said Trochta.

The busy intersection sits on the edge of Guelph/Eramosa and Centre Wellington. MTO must engage with both municipalities to develop a plan that works.

MTO released a statement to CityNews Kitchener, saying they are currently in the process of determining the best option for the intersection.

“Both traffic signals and a roundabout will be considered in the study.”

The ministry gave no date for when construction will begin. The statement goes on to say that a design phase has to be done first which will include input from the public and other stakeholders.
