Man charged with attempted murder after starting fire at Cambridge home

A man has been charged with attempted murder after setting a fire at a home in Cambridge while three people were sleeping inside.

It happened Saturday around 5 a.m. in the area of Ballantyne Avenue and McDonald Avenue.

Two of the residents, a 25-year-old woman and a 3-year-old both escaped the home and called the police. They didn’t suffer any injuries.

The third resident, a 24-year-old Cambridge man, was evacuated by firefighters and was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.

The Cambridge Fire Department put out the blaze.

Police found a 30-year-old man around 10 a.m. in the area of Dundas Street North and Samuelson Street and arrested him.

Through an investigation, police found he set the fire intentionally.

He has been charged with three counts of attempted murder as well as arson, forcible confinement, and possession of stolen goods.

The man and the victims knew each other before the incident.
