What’s open and closed for New Year’s Day in the region
Christmas is bringing in some much-needed holiday cheer, and with it comes some closures to regional services. This a look at what will be open and closed over the holiday season.
Regional Services:
Warming centres in Cambridge at 150 Main St. and in Kitchener at 150 Frederick St. are set to be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. including weekends and Christmas.

All regional administration offices and Kitchener City Hall will be closed Monday, Dec. 25, Tuesday Dec. 26 and Monday, Jan. 1 with regular operating hours the rest of the week.
Waterloo City Hall and Cambridge City Hall are closed Dec. 22 to Jan. 1.
Public health clinics, welcome spaces, senior services administration, Sunnyside Wellness Centre, Schneider Haus and the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum are all closed Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1.
Transit:
Grand River Transit will have their winter holiday service operating from Dec. 25 to Jan. 7. However, Grand River Transit customer service centres are closed on Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1.

Libraries:
The Region of Waterloo library branches will be mainly open on Dec. 24 but closed the next day for Christmas, as well as closed on Dec. 26. All regional library branches are closed on Jan. 1, 2024.
The Kitchener Public Library is open Dec. 28 to Dec. 30 then closed Dec. 24 to 27, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Cambridge Idea Exchange is open Dec. 27 to Dec. 31 then closed Dec. 24 to Dec. 26 and Jan. 1.
The Waterloo Public Library is open Dec. 27 to 30 then closed Dec. 24 to Dec. 26, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Waste collection:
Curbside waste collection has been canceled for Monday, December 25, 2023, and Monday, January 1, 2024. During these weeks, collection will move over to the day after.
For only two weeks after Christmas Day, the region collects natural Christmas trees as part of the curbside collection which they then chip into mulch.
Shopping malls:
The Kitchener market will be open Dec. 23, Dec. 30 and Jan. 6 for people to shop at.

The Cambridge Farmers’ Market will be open Dec. 23 and closed Dec. 30.
Conestoga Mall will be open Dec. 24 until 5 p.m. for last minute shoppers. It’s closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
The Fairview Park Mall will be open Dec. 24 until 5 p.m. for last minute shoppers too. It’s closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
LCBO stores and Beer Stores are set to be closed for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Most normal operating hours resume after Jan. 1, 2024.
