Thieves targeting catalytic converters, 14 stolen in 3 days

A recent string of thefts in Kitchener has police investigating as 14 catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles in the span of three days.

The thefts happened between Dec. 15 and Dec. 18 in the Trillium Drive and Beasley Drive area.

Police said the catalytic converters were stolen from commercial vehicles that were parked at businesses.

It’s part of a recently growing trend where catalytic converters are being targeted by thieves.

Police said the device is part of a car’s emission system and is located between the engine and muffler. They’re mainly stolen because of the metals they contain.

Waterloo Regional Police continue to investigate the thefts and anyone with information is asked to contact them.

They also asked the public to report any suspicious activity, including suspicious people seen hanging around vehicles or in parking lots.
