The City of Cambridge officially has its new Ward 1 councillor, with Helen Shwery signing the declaration of office and taking her oath.
A brief formal ceremony was held before Tuesday night’s council meeting.
Shwery read the declaration of office and signed city’s code of conduct, getting a round of applause in the council chamber when all was said and done.
Mayor Jan Liggett welcomed her to council, saying “I am confident that Councillor Shwery will bring a unique point of view to decisions made at council, be a valuable asset to discussions, and a passionate advocate for residents of Ward 1.”
The mayor added, “It will be good to have a full compliment once again of council.”
Shwery herself did not make a speech.
She won the November 13, Ward 1 by-election, by a wide margin with 944 votes, roughly half of all votes cast.
