Conestoga College opens new esports facility at Waterloo campus

Conestoga College has unveiled a new esports gaming facility at it’s Waterloo campus.

The facility includes 36 gaming computers, access to gaming consoles, a six-player competitive desk and a control room for live-streaming productions. It opened on November 7.

“The new esports hub provides an incredible opportunity for student engagement and academic excellence,” said Trish Weigel Green, associate vice-president of Student Affairs in a press release. “This is just the beginning of esports at Conestoga.”

The new facility will be used to host weekly events, programming and open lab time for students. It will also support the college’s new Esports Marketing and Event Management certificate graduate program that launched this fall.

Conestoga College said it is the first of its kind in the region and is working with Explore Waterloo Region to make the area a “renowned esports destination.” In 2020, a study from the Entertainment Software Association of Canada found 61 per cent of Canadians, or 23 million, said they play video games.

Conestoga College launched their competitive esports program in 2020. They have teams ranging from sports-based to battle arena leagues across North America.
