People driving through Preston will notice large banners lining city poles with images of local veterans. The Preston Legion put them up for Remembrance Day, as part of their banner program.
Cambridge families and businesses donated to the Preston Legion to have a loved one or community member honoured this year.
With all 67 banner spots now filled, the Preston Legion is hoping they can expand the program wider next year.
Each banner contains an image of the veteran alongside information about their military service.
The president of the Preston Legion branch, Joe Gowing, said they are expecting a large gathering this year for their Remembrance Day events, as November 11 falls on a Saturday.
“It’s just amazing the feedback from the community itself, we have been accepting donations for some families that can’t afford the banner, there’s some businesses that have been donating to be able to pay for those banners for those family’s, it’s a huge community event to be apart of,” said Gowing.
He added that the City of Cambridge has been easy to work with and they are working with them to put on a parade.
“This year we are trying to focus on changing the definition of what people think is a veteran, were looking at younger veterans, people may not understand but we have had wars in the last little while like Afghanistan and not a lot of people understand they are veterans as well and seem to forget that,” said Gowing.
Anyone who may not be able to make it to Preston to see the banners honouring local veterans, can see them on Preston Legion’s Facebook page and website.
