2023 Poppy Campaign set to begin today

By Evan Brewer

This year’s Poppy Campaign is set to kick off at The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530.

The campaign will run until November 11 with donations being used to help veterans in need.

Steven Mann, the Vice President of the Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo stated “For veterans in need, if an emergency pops up like a refrigerator breaks. If they don’t have the funds available they can request some funds from The Poppy Campaign and they will help them the best they can.”

Along with this, the donations will also go towards sponsoring army and navy cadets programs as well as youth education and literacy programs.

When speaking about the purpose behind the campaign, Mann said “The Poppy Campaign is the act of remembrance. It’s to take the time to remember our fallen and the sacrifices they made so that we can have the freedoms that we have today.”

He continued by saying “Take time especially on November 11 to think back and take a couple of minutes to think about those who didn’t make it out of those conflicts.”

To mark the beginning of The Poppy Campaign there will be a changing of the flag Friday morning at 11 a.m.
