By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Hamilton man found guilty of second degree murder in the 2017 death of his former girlfriend has been sentenced to life imprisonment, eligible for parole after serving 16 years.

A judge delivered the sentence in a Kitchener court on Sept. 27.

Melinda Vasilije was 22 when she was killed.

She had been stabbed 47 times in her apartment, on Country Hill Drive near Block Line Road, on April 28, 2017.

Twenty seven of those times in her neck, and she had six stab wounds to her chest.

After the murder, now 30-year-old Ager Hasan fled to the U.S.

He was arrested on July 11, 2017, more than two months after the murder in San Antonio, Texas by Secret Service agents as part of a dark web counterfeit currency investigation, and brought back to face charges.

The ruling comes more than six years after Vasilije was murdered in her Kitchener apartment and five months since the start of the trial.

Having already served six years behind bars, the earliest Hasan could be released is 2033.
