A new report coming to Kitchener City Council on Monday will give an update on how well residents are reducing carbon emissions.
Reep Green Solutions, a local environmental charity, says between April 2022 and March 2023, 1,132 meaningful changes were made by residents.
This includes actions such as planting trees, making home energy efficiency upgrades and planting gardens. Since 2020, the organization has encouraged 3,184 meaningful changes. In 2020, the group set out to make 10,000 meaningful changes by 2030. The region has pledged to reduce their carbon emissions by 50 per cent in the same year.
The report notes residents made $4.4 million in home energy upgrades, with $801,409 being covered by government rebates. Some of the most common upgrades included attic insulation, windows and heating/cooling systems. The report estimates those residents will save $185,000 a year and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions by 410 tonnes annually.
REEP also announced they will no longer continue their WET Home Reviews. The program had been working with the region for five years to save residents water.
Kitchener City Council’s meeting is at 7 p.m. The full report can be found here.
