Students at the University of Waterloo may have to look elsewhere for their morning cup of coffee.
A video posted on social media has forced the temporary closure of a Tim Hortons in the university’s Student Life Centre after appearing to show a slight rodent issue.
The video, uploaded to TikTok Sep. 20, appears to show a trio of rats poking their heads out from a gap in the ceiling before climbing down the wall and out of view.
In a statement, Tim Hortons said it was “incredibly disappointed” to learn of the video, adding it took immediate action to close the location down and engage pest control.
It said it also reached out to the university to figure out where the rats had come from.
The university, meantime, also released a statement echoing the coffee shop’s concerns.
It said it remains committed to “providing a safe, clean environment for purchasing and consuming food on campus,” before adding it too moved to shutter the location and contact pest control immediately upon learning of the incident and the video online.
“Food Services operates many eateries across campus which are regularly inspected by both internal and Region of Waterloo Public Health teams to ensure they meet or exceed hygiene standards,” said the statement from a UW spokesperson who also said the location will remain closed “until the issue is resolved.”
As for where the rats may have come from, the university said it believes they may be linked to recent construction at the Student Life Centre.
