Man accused in UW stabbings appears in court, police lay additional charge

Geovanny Villalba-Aleman will remain behind bars after his bail hearing was pushed once again.

The 24-year-old made an appearance via live video feed at the Waterloo Regional Courthouse on Friday morning, where he was initially scheduled for a bail hearing.

A court representative recommended that the hearing be moved, stating that a delay would allow more time for the case to be reviewed.

Villalba-Aleman was dressed in orange prison garb and spoke only to provide his name, his birth date, and to clarify his next court appearance.

He was instructed to get in touch with his lawyer over the weekend.

The former University of Waterloo (UW) international student allegedly walked into a gender studies class at the post-secondary institution and stabbed a professor and two students on June 28.

Police say that the attack is believed to be hate-motivated and was a planned and targeted attack related to gender expression and gender identity.

Villalba-Aleman was initially facing 10 charges including three counts of aggravated assault, four counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and mischief under $5,000.

An additional charge of attempted murder was laid on Aug. 25.

The next court appearance for Villalba-Aleman has been scheduled for Sept. 8.
