Police warn university students about rental scams

It’s almost time to head back to school but class is already in session for scammers.

With many post-secondary students moving in ahead of the fall semester, police have received reports of rental scams occurring in the university district of Waterloo.

In one incident last week, Waterloo Regional Police were called by someone who said they tried to rent an apartment and were told they would need to e-transfer a deposit before viewing the place.

Once they sent the money, they were ghosted and later learned it was all a scam.

The investigation is ongoing into the reported rental fraud and police are out with tips for university students to help prevent any further victimization.

Those include confirming a property is actually for rent, viewing it, and reviewing a contract before sending any money. Full tips can be found by clicking here.

If you’ve been the victim of a rental scam, you’re advised to contact the ad publisher to let them know and notify both police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
