Natural gas rates to drop in Kitchener

It might be a rough sight at the pumps for Kitchener residents, but it’s good news for natural gas bills.

A presentation from Greg St. Louis, director of Kitchener Utilities (KU) at a recent Finance and Corporate Services Committee meeting revealed savings for customers starting Nov.1.

Councillors unanimously approved an decrease of $4.15 cents per cubic metre to the supply rate and an increase of $1.5 cents to the delivery rate. That results in net savings of $2.65 cents per cubic metre, which would save the average customer $53 from November to next October. The report listed the average customer as someone who uses 2000 cubic metres.

Ward 3 Coun. Jason Deneault expressed his satisfaction.

“I think anytime we can save people a few bucks, it’s always a good thing. Although it’s not a huge amount, it goes a little bit of ways to help some of our local families.”

Deneault and Mayor Berry Vrbanovic also took the time to praise the city councils of old for opting to keep KU around instead of making a short-sighted decision to sell the service.

“From my perspective, this city has been well-served by Kitchener Utilities for well over 100 years,” said the Mayor. “And in my view, [the City] will continue to be served by Kitchener Utilities for many years going forward.”

Formal approval of the rate changes will come at the next city council meeting on Aug. 28.
