Cambridge Coun. Donna Reid passes away

Cambridge City Councillor Donna Reid has passed away.

The City of Cambridge confirmed that the long serving councillor passed away Sunday morning at Grand River Hospital.

Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett extended her condolences to Reid’s family and close friends.

“Donna was known for her advocacy for more inclusive policies and practices within municipal government, she fiercely protected the rights of women and championed the causes of her constituents, she leaves a wonderful legacy in our City,” Liggett stated.

Reid was born in Woodstock and moved to Preston when she 16 years old, and worked as a teacher within the Waterloo Region District School Board.

She had been the councillor for Ward 1 since 2010.

A statement released by the city highlighted Reid’s work in making Cambridge an ‘age friendly city’, and supporting initiatives like free menstrual supplies in city facilities, the work of the Canadian Federation of University Women in Cambridge and advocating for equity, diversity and inclusion for all.

The city stated that flags will be lowered to half mast in Reid’s honour, and books of condolences will be available at City Hall starting on Monday.
