Who are the top tech titans in Waterloo Region?
Waterloo EDC, an economic development agency that helps international companies expand locally, has released a top ten ranking based off the number of workers employed in the region.
To no surprise, Google (Kitchener), took the top spot on the list, as their local office is one of the largest engineering hubs outside the United States with over a thousand employees.
OpenText (Waterloo) and BlackBerry (Waterloo) round out the top three, followed by SAP (Waterloo), EPAM Systems (Kitchener), Oracle NetSuite (Kitchener), Desire2Learn (Kitchener), ApplyBoard (Kitchener), eSentire (Waterloo) and Arctic Wolf (Waterloo).
Waterloo EDC put the region’s success down to six main reasons.
One is the top talent coming out of our universities. They state that Waterloo Region has the fastest growing millennial and new graduate populations in North America.
Another is the strategic location for companies, with a short drive to the 401 which brings you directly to a major airport.
Waterloo EDC also noted the cost advantages of Waterloo Region, like reduced payroll tax and The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive, as well as the quality of life and our diverse community profile.
All 10 companies have had an impact on the community when it comes to cultivating top talent and strengthening the tech ecosystem, but a specific five are based in Kitchener, which has made the Mayor very proud.
So pleased to see that five of these companies have chosen to #MakeItKitchener & have made the @CityKitchener home for their thriving operations as part of our local tech ecosystem – @googlecanada, @Oracle, @EPAMSystems, @D2L and @ApplyBoard. Thx for believing in our community! https://t.co/U9k1QGZeN5
