CHCA hosting a ‘Progress In Diversity & Inclusion’ event

The Conestoga Heavy Construction Association (CHCA) is hosting a ‘Progress In Diversity & Inclusion’ event on Thursday, July 6 at the Galt Country Club in Cambridge.

The event provides CHCA Members, industry organizations, trade associations, and professional networks the opportunity to collaborate on diversity and inclusion challenges in the construction industry. CHCA is a 38 member local heavy civil construction association.

Mark Melo, the President of CHCA, said the goal of the event is to bring to welcome and recruit people into the industry by reaching out to the entire population. He said that everyone in the construction industry is competing for workers.

“It’s [about] getting people out there and showing that message that construction isn’t just a dirty industry to be in,” said Melo on the Mike Farwell Show on Tuesday.

New legislation came into effect on July 1 amending the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act mandating at least one women’s-only washroom on large construction sites and properly fitted PPE.

Leslie Dibling, the Operational Engagement & Innovation Manager at Capital Paving said there has been progress made to diversity and inclusion in the construction industry.

“We’re coming a long way to making sure that everybody is comfortable and safe on all of our job sites,” said Dibling.

The event will run from 5:30pm to 8pm. Tickets are available on the CHCA’s Eventbrite page and at the door starting at $49.26 each. All members of the community are welcome.
