Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory for the City of Toronto, the GTA and Hamilton Wednesday afternoon and evening.
There is potential for an active afternoon and evening with the possible development of funnel clouds.
“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms” reads the advisory.
Although this is usually not a danger near the ground, there is still the possibility rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
Landspout tornadoes usually don’t cause significant damage but still have the potential to damage roofs, toss debris and topple trees.
“We’re not expecting a severe thunderstorm outbreak or tornadic activity necessarily,” CityNews 680’s weather specialist Denise Andreacchi says.
There has been no watch or warning issued as of noon.
Taking shelter is strongly advised should a funnel cloud develop without warning.
The city of Toronto has already seen large amounts of rainfall this week. It lead to flooding and watershead concern.

The Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) issued a flood warning Monday following record rainfall. The warning has since been downgraded, however water levels remain high throughout the city.
Pearson Airport saw 31 mm of rainfall on Monday, breaking the previous daily record for June 12 that was set in 1954.
