We are now getting details of what went wrong during a flight that involved a Cambridge pilot in Saskatchewan last September.
A report was released by the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) outlining the details of the crash.
The report states that the aircraft struck a communications tower in the area.
The aircraft was destroyed and both pilots died.
22-year-old Cambridge pilot Jaden Hallman was one of two pilots in the aircraft at the time of the crash.
A four foot section of the right wing of the aircraft was shorn off, the report said. The fuselage then travelled about 240m before hitting the ground where it caught fire after impact.
The report also said the communications tower was marked and lit in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulations.
No adverse weather conditions played a factor in the crash, however, it said that the glare from the sun, which was rising from the east, could have impeded the pilot’s view of the tower.
The details of the flight was to collect pipeline infrastructure in the area along a predetermined route. According to the TSB, the pilots were conducting a visual flight rules (VFR) flight consisting of multiple legs from Swift Current, Saskatchewan to Estevan, Saskatchewan.
The report outlines that typically a VFR Navigation Chart would be used by pilots flying in accordance with the rules. The chart would have illustrated any obstacles or other navigational information pertinent to the flight. The TSB said through the investigation that it was unable to determine if the pilots consulted such a chart while flight planning or during the flight.
