Another pedestrian hit by ION LRT train in Waterloo Region

By Brad Kraemer

The Waterloo Regional Police Services (WRPS) Traffic Services Unit is still investigating the fatal collision.

On Saturday night, around 11:45 p.m., emergency services responded to reports of a collision on the ION Light Rail Transit (LRT) tracks near Bearinger Road.

The initial police investigation determined that the man was walking on the tracks when he was struck by a train travelling north.

The collision trapped the man under the train, and an extraction team was required to rescue him, but he was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Fortunately, no passengers were on the ION train at the time.

Both the tracks as well as Bearinger Road were closed off for several hours for the investigation.

This is the second time an LRT train has struck a Waterloo Region pedestrian in less than a week.

A Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute student was struck by a train in front of the school last Wednesday.

According to the organizers of the GoFundMe page set up to cover the medical, rehabilitation and travelling expenses, the 16-year-old boy is progressing well.

The GoFundMe page is nearing $15,000 in donations.

An e-mail statement from the Region of Waterloo's Commissioner of Transportation Services, Mathieu Goetzke, was provided to CityNews 570 on Monday afternoon.

It read, “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those impacted by recent incidents involving individuals and ION light rail vehicles. As both incidents are currently under investigation by Waterloo Regional Police Service, we will not [be] commenting further at this time.”
