More speed enforcement cameras coming to local school zones

By Erin Anderson

The Region of Waterloo continues to crack down on speeders in school zones.

The Automated Speed Enforcement Program first launched in 2021 and according to staff, it's been a success in terms of getting people to slow down.

The program sees automated cameras installed near schools, which are triggered by speed sensors and snap photos of licence plates if drivers exceed the posted limits.

Council already approved eight new sites for the cameras as part of the 2023 budget and staff are now considering another eight sites for this year.

If approved, there would be 32 school zones equipped with the automated cameras.

Regional staff are also working on a plan to present to council to expand the program to all school locations and community safety zones.
