GRCA urging caution around local waterways

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Grand River Conservation Authority has issued a water safety message given the current weather conditions.

According to the University of Waterloo Weather Station, the region received over 30 mm of rain on Thursday. That has resulted in increased river flows and unsafe ice conditions throughout the Grand River watershed.

“No significant flooding is expected with this event; however, river flows in local waterways will be higher than normal for this time of year, increasing the risk in low-lying areas typically prone to flooding.” the GRCA said in a news release.

The GRCA adds residents should stay off any ice as it was significantly weakened during the warmer weather. Ice fishing has already been closed at all Grand River Conservation Areas that offer the activity.

“The public is encouraged to exercise extreme caution around all local waterways. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses.” the release went on to say.

The water safety message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. Monday.
