By CityNews Kitchener Staff

What began as a suspicious death investigation in Baden, is now a homicide investigation.

Waterloo Regional Police provided the update late Wednesday morning.

Investigators say that information gathered during the investigation has led to the incident being declared a homicide.

The body of an 88-year-old woman was found inside a residence on Sandhills Road on Saturday afternoon. Emergency crews had originally responded for a medical call.

Police have also now confirmed the victim as Viola Erb.

Erb and her late husband Vernon co-founded Erb Transport Limited in 1959.

The Erb Group of Companies issued a statement on Wednesday that read, “Waterloo Regional Police have determined that her death is being investigated as a homicide. It is inappropriate to speculate any other details at this time.”

The statement added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Erb family, and we are allowing them this time to grieve the loss of their loved one.”

No cause of death has been released by police. They say the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-570-9777 ext. 8191 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Viola Erb's visitation will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home in New Hamburg.

Her funeral will take place Monday, October 3 at 11 a.m. at Steinmann Mennonite Church in Baden.
