Local MP plans to raise issue of housing affordability in House of Commons

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre is planning to raise the issue of housing affordability when MPs return to Ottawa later this month.

Mike Morrice is also backing a petition, which over 1,000 people have signed so far, which calls housing unaffordability and homelessness twin national crises.

Supporters want the federal government to focus on eight key areas, including creating national standards to establish rent and vacancy controls, funding to be prioritized for non-profit and co-op housing, and establish regulations to control the amount corporations profit from buying up affordable housing units and flipping them to market rate units.

The House of Commons is scheduled to resume sitting on September 19.

During a visit to Kitchener last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $2 billion plan to create close to 17,000 housing units across the country.
