Oak Creek Public School gets ready to open its doors

The clock is ticking to the start of a new school year, and a brand new public school is getting ready to open its doors in Kitchener.

It was announced in March that the new school at 80 Tartan Avenue would be named 'Oak Creek', following an engagement campaign and approval by trustees with the Waterloo Region District School Board.

The school will be able to accommodate 591 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. It will also include an EarlyON child care centre and a community centre.

Construction has been ongoing for 18 months. Jeff Johnson, the principal of the school said it was the biggest project undertaken by the school board, in terms of infrastructure.

The classrooms feature “flow” desks that can be freely arranged, white boards positioned lower, and no teachers' desks to keep learning student-centred.

“There are so many possibilities for what learning can look like in our classrooms, where we're going to be challenging our thinking and reflecting on what comes to life in those spaces,” said Johnson.

Oak Creek Public School also has a Nutrition for Learning room, where healthy snacks and food can be prepared for students in need, with no sign-up required.

While the school will officially open next week for young kids, Grade 8 will not be offered until next year.
