Town of Erin to hold drive-through marriage service

The COVID 19 pandemic has put a damper on many celebrations and delayed many events such as birthdays, family dinners and weddings.

The Town of Erin is hoping to turn the tide for those wanting to tie the knot and offer a unique way for couples to get married.

Well, mark your calendars for September 9th. The town just outside of Guelph is inviting couples to drive up to Town Hall and make their commitment to each other official.

From 1 to 4 p.m. that second Friday of September, couples that already have a valid marriage licence will be able to participate in the first-ever drive-through marriage service with no appointment required.

Mayor Allan Alls says the special event will help promote tourism and local business in a fun way.

“It is the Town's strategic priority to be innovative in providing service excellence and facilitating partnerships within the community to promote tourism and economic development … Last year Council passed a resolution to offer marriage solemnization services by the Town, and we are taking it a little further with this unique and fun opportunity for those who are ready to tie the knot.”

The  Director of Legislative Services and Clerk for the town, Lisa Campion adds, most couple are looking to have a bare-minimum ceremony while they plan something bigger at a later date and avoid the backlogs that have been created, pretty much everywhere, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

It's $250 for the ceremony and a reminder you will need to get that marriage licence ahead of time (which will ring in at $135).

All newly married couples will receive a surprise “Exclusively Erin” gift, donated by local businesses.
