For the first time in two years, Kitchener Blues Festival will return to its in-person format beginning on Thursday.
This year's event will feature 80 entertaining acts and president of the event, Rob Barkshire, is encouraging everyone to come out.
“Many of these acts do not otherwise come and play in Kitchener, so it's a great opportunity,” he said. ” Some of the blues greats are coming this year, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Coco Montoya, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. There's so much to see and there's something for everyone so come on out and have a good time.”
Friday to Sunday's concerts are free with Thursday being the annual fundraising concert. Two types of tickets can be purchased for the fundraiser: general admission or VIP. General admission tickets are $40 while the VIP passes are $150. They include a reserved seat, a meal, and a pass into the VIP area for the remainder of the weekend.
“We're very excited that Sam Roberts Band is headlining with the opening act, White Horse,” said Barkshire. “It's going to be one of the better selling Thursday concerts and we've had some great ones in the past.”
Tickets can be purchased online at ticketscene.ca or at Encore Records in downtown Kitchener.
Despite COVID-19 still being a concern for many when attending events, Barkshire isn't concerned about that affecting ticket sales and reassured that the proper safety precautions will be taken.
“People are starting to come out again. Some people, naturally, are still a little wary of going out in crowds but a lot of people are getting past that and learning to live with COVID. We will definitely be following all of the regional guidelines for health and safety as well.”
This will be a rain or shine event as two tents will be set up at the different stage locations in case of rain. If the weather becomes more ominous, Barkshire said that there are procedures in place to be able to manage that.
He added that this is going to be a great family-friendly environment and everyone should be excited for the festival.
“It's a great time to get together with the community. It's a way to meet new friends and if you're a volunteer, you're going to work with some happy people that are very pleased to come out and give their time. The music is free and it's the perfect time to enjoy it all.”
