KPL aims to reduce barriers to filmmaking with Commons Studio

By Luke Schulz

Aspiring filmmakers in the region will now have expanded access to the tools of their trade, as the Kitchener Public Library has announced the launch of its Commons Studio – an accessible collection of film making and photography equipment available to rent at their Central Library in downtown Kitchener.

Touted as a “one-of-a-kind collection” by the library, that collection of equipment aims to reduce barriers to film making, and to assist creators in developing their own “high quality films and creative projects.” In addition to the collection of film making equipment, the Kitchener Public Library has also equipped its Heffner Studio with editing suites as part of an “emergent suite” of studio-focused programs and projects.

Calling the new collection an “exciting opportunity”, KPL's Community Development Division Manager Nathan Stretch said the organization is keen to build on a history of assisting “enterprising not-for-profits”, making specialized equipment available to community members.

“Sustainable access to technology is at the heart of the Commons Studio project and we're excited to see what the community will create.” said Stretch.

The Commons Studio initiative is said to have been made possible through partnerships between the library, the Working Centre and Lighthouse Equipment Inc.

You can find more information regarding the Commons Studio, the renting process and the equipment now available with a library card, on the Kitchener Public Library website
