Local drag queen shows different side to drag, math

By CityNews Staff

Drag and math are two subjects that don't typically go together. However, Kyne, a local drag queen, is using them both to show that nobody has to be confined to just one aspect of their life.

Kyne was studying math at the University of Waterloo while doing drag separately, but during the pandemic she had the idea to combine the two in a series of videos on social media.

“I guess I thought it would be funny if people started seeing a drag queen talking about math equations and people ended up really loving it,” Kyne said.

Kyne's videos have attracted millions of views and she hopes they show people they are capable of anything.

“You can be interested in math and academics and also be interested in fashion and music,” Kyne said. “You don't have to choose one or the other. You don't have to be one specific kind of person.”

Drag has grown in popularity in recent years, but in the United States some lawmakers want to ban children from drag shows. Kyne explained that these types of laws can have a negative effect on children.

“By banning things in schools and banning children from going to these shows, it just forces children to go back into the closet, to go back into their own solitude,” said Kyne.

Ultimately, Kyne's goal is to show that members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community are just like everyone else.

“What does it matter if someone wants to wear a wig on their head? … it's all superficial. What really matters is what's in your brain and what's in their heart.”
