Elections Ontario says voting extended at Cambridge polling station (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

There were reports of computer issues impacting at least one local polling station on Thursday.

NDP candidate Karen Meissner posted to social media that she was aware of an issue at a polling station in Kitchener-Conestoga, where she is running.

Elections Ontario provided a statement to CityNews 570 just after 12:30 p.m.

A spokesperson said, “There are no technical issues at the polls that are impacting the voting process. All polls are open, and we continue to process electors.”

They added some polls in Ontario opened late Thursday morning, and the following statement was issued to CityNews 570 just after 5:30 p.m.:

“The vast majority of polls opened on time at 9 AM today. The opening of some polls was delayed, but none by more than two hours. These delays were caused by incidents such as fire, sewer backups and power outages.

The centralized portal that Elections Ontario supplies to parties was disrupted this morning due to connectivity issues, but since early afternoon data has been regularly updated as expected. Political parties have always been and remain able, to visit polls to get the data they require to get out the vote.”

Elections Ontario noted there will be extended hours for the polls that opened late.

In total, 27 polling stations will be open past 9 p.m. — some by up to two hours.

It includes at Avenue Road Baptist Church in Cambridge, which will stay open until 9:15 p.m.

Results for the impacted electoral districts will not be released until all their polls have closed.
