Food trucks can stop in Kitchener residential areas this summer

By Germain Ma

Getting takeout could get a lot more convenient.

Kitchener council approved updates to business licensing bylaw Monday night that allows food truck operators to operate in residential areas during the summer.

It's after three years of bylaw licensing review and a two-year pilot program.

The city said it assessed the bylaw, associated fees, and the process to make sure the update would benefit neighbourhoods, community organizations, and the business community.

The changes include expanded permissions, a new type of license, and accepting business licensing applications online.

For food truck operators, the new streamlined online application process is expected to launch later this year.

It will allow owners to apply or renew their license and pay by credit card.

There are now reduced fees for some licenses, including for shorter-term pop-up businesses, and new business licensing categories.

Business owners can learn more about the bylaw or apply for a license here.
