Omicron needs provincial approach, says region’s top doctor

By Mark Pare

Waterloo Region's top doctor said the Omicron variant will be a provincial wave, and one that requires a provincial approach.

Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang spoke to Regional Council Wednesday night, encouraging residents to get the COVID-19 booster shot as soon as possible to combat this new threat.

“I appreciate this is another time of uncertainty, and challenge for our community,” she said. “Residents can take actions now to reduce their risk, and help protect their loved ones.”

This comes amid a rising COVID-19 case load, including 99 new cases reported Wednesday in Waterloo, the highest daily count since April.

Over 44,000 residents have already gotten their third dose, and that number is expected to rise beginning Monday, when all adults have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves.

The region announced Wednesday they are expanding their efforts to get more booster shots into arms, including the return of pop-up clinics, the vaccine bus and a Hockey-Hub vaccination clinic at Bingemans.
