Hospice care in region getting $750K funding boost

A one-time funding boost is coming to a pair of local organizations.

The province is investing a total of $750,000, with half of it going to Hospice Waterloo Region and the other half going to Innisfree House.

Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris said this is to help the two organizations deal with costs incurred unexpectedly by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are grateful the government has recognized the unique financial pressures facing hospices due to the pandemic,” Judy Nairn, Executive Director of Hospice of Waterloo Region, said in a release.

“Over 50 per cent of our operating budget is covered by local donors and this funding will address some of the shortfalls we have experienced. Hospices are an integral component of the health care system that provide appropriate care for those at end of life while supporting their families and we look forward to working with the government and Hospice Palliative Care Ontario to ensure that this highly valued critical service is always available to our community.”

Harris said this funding will represent a 36 per cent boost to how much the province invests in each organization annually.
