Local health unit encourages flu shots for all eligible

Time to start thinking about when you're going to get your flu shot.
That's the message from Region of Waterloo Public Health as it says doses are already being doled out to those considered most at-risk. Shots are due to be made more broadly available to anyone six months or older as of next month.
“The flu shot will be available in pharmacies for anyone two years of age and older,” said Region of Waterloo Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang during the region's weekly update. “Last year it was five years of age and older, this year it's as low as two years.”
The flu shot is also available from your family doctor or at a walk-in clinic.
“And public health will be holding select clinics for families with children between six months of age up to two years who are not yet eligible to get the vaccine at a pharmacy,” said Dr. Wang.
She is also making it clear, getting the flu shot does not interfere with your ability to get a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine if you've still yet to get one but are planning to or are coming due for a second dose.
“You are able to get the flu shot even if you have recently gotten your COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time as or any time before or after non-COVID-19 vaccines.”
The health unit also says the province has taken steps to try to minimize any potential shortages of the flu shot this year. Officials say there were issues last year due to high up-front demand so this year the province has allocated more vaccine sooner.
