Region looking for public input on former Cold War-era bunker

By Tim Herd

The Region of Waterloo is encouraging the public to come up with ways to modernize the former nuclear bunker located in Kitchener.

The bunker was built in 1966 and was meant to house local officials in the event of a nuclear attack.

It was decommissioned in 1992 and was used for training exercises, and by community groups, however, has been vacant since 2017.

There have been calls from community members, and officials across the region to demolish the structure as it would cost above $1 million to restore.

However, the region is asking for community input on how to make the structure more modern, and to find ways to turn it into a 'beautiful setting'.

Residents are encouraged to fill out the online adaptive reuse survey at engagewr.ca.
