City estimates Queen Victoria statue clean-up will cost $2K

Waterloo Regional Police continue to investigate after the Queen Victoria statue in Kitchener was doused with red paint.

Police were called to Victoria Park on Canada Day, although they said it's unknown when the statue was actually painted.

Some onlookers on July 1 broke into applause, while others shared discontent.

A spokesperson with the City of Kitchener estimates it will cost $2,000 to clean-up, including equipment and chemicals.

They said while the statue has been hit with graffiti before, this is the first time it was painted red.

On Friday morning around 11 a.m., police received reports that a male had climbed the Queen Victoria statue.

They said officers and Canadian Mental Health workers were able to negotiate with the individual and get him safely off the structure just after 3:30 p.m.
