UW program helps high school students with remote learning

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Earlier this year, the University of Waterloo launched a new program to help high school students across Ontario succeed with remote learning during the pandemic.

The program, called Hive Mind, is aimed at students who are struggling with subjects like advanced functions, calculus, chemistry and physics — all of which are required subjects for post-secondary engineering programs.

It was launched to help ensure students interested in STEM careers would not be at a disadvantage because of the pandemic.

“Many are struggling with digital divide issues and additional mental health stress and can’t learn as well in an online environment,” Leanne Predote, senior manager of Waterloo’s engineering outreach department said. “Hive Mind gives them the one-on-one support they need right now.”

According to Predote, the response to the program has been “overwhelmingly positive.” Since February, over 120 have registered for the program and 350 sessions have taken place.

Students can register through the Hive Mind site for individual or group sessions with the Waterloo Engineering undergraduate students employed as learning assistants.
