Construction starts next week on new medical building in Kitchener

It's been over a decade in the making, and even faced further delays with the pandemic, but construction is set to begin next week on the first of two new medical buildings in the south end of Kitchener.

The Homer Watson Medical Centre will be going up at the old Kitchener Frame property at Homer Watson Boulevard and Bleams Road.

“I think it's a necessity,” said Gary Ball, co-owner of the property, “You have a large population accumulating there.”

“Our closeness to the 401, plus Homer Watson as a four-lane road, so it's easy to access, whether you're coming from Waterloo or whether you're coming from south of the 401. It's quite easy to get to.”

The first building (about 35,000 square feet) is slated to open in January 2022, while construction on the second building (30,000 square feet) is scheduled to start in six months.

The first building is fully leased, and the second building is about halfway there.

All will be medical professionals, including general practitioners, audiologists, psychiatrists and eyewear specialists.

It's been a pricey endeavour, with the environmental clean up costing about $10 million.

Ball said the pandemic impacted the project timeline by about a year, seeing everything from the availability of contractors and solidifying tenants amid the uncertainty.
