City puts plans for The Boathouse on ice until after pandemic

By Erin Anderson

A historic venue at Victoria Park in Kitchener has been vacant for well over a year.

The Boathouse is owned by the city, which then leases the facility to an operator.

The previous tenant stepped away in October of 2019.

At the time, the city said it would assess the future of the facility and begin a recruitment process – with hopes of having a new tenant moved in by early 2020.

A few months after those intentions were announced, the COVID-19 pandemic arrived.

“The city has delayed issuing the request for proposal (RFP) to secure a new tenant due to the pandemic and challenges faced by our restaurant, hospitality, and entertainment communities,” said a spokesperson with the CIty of Kitchener in an e-mail statement. “Staff is continuing to monitor the impact of the pandemic on local restaurants and the RFP for a new tenant will be issued post-pandemic.”
