Damage estimated around $700K after large house fire in Waterloo (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Police and fire officials are on scene in the area of Chesapeake Drive and Spinnaker Crescent in Waterloo.

Chesapeake Drive was closed from Brigantine to Seawind for fire cleanup.

Acting Platoon Chief Matthew Wells says crews responded just before 5 p.m. to a working fire in the home's garage.

The family was home when the fire broke out, however, no one was injured.

The three family members, identified by neighbours as the Matheson family, have been displaced, and are being taken care of.

Wells told 570 NEWS the damage was initially pegged at about $400,000, but that has gone up to about $700,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is assisting in the investigation, supporting regional police and Waterloo Fire Rescue in determining the cause of the fire.

Neighbours have put together a Facebook group to help the three that were displaced.

A GoFundMe has also been launched, with a goal of raising $10,000.
