Waterloo Region bracing for population growth

The latest data shows that Waterloo Region is in for gargantuan population growth.

According to recent reports, Waterloo Region's latest population growth shows we've grown by over 50,000 people in the last five years.

Now, we're expected to grow even more so in the next five decades, and the region is opening up to public consultations to deal with a large population growth.

That growth, expected by 2051, we'll be at just over 950,000 people.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic tells The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS they've continued at looking at 160 residents and jobs per hectare.

“In many of those stationed areas, they've looked at a reduced target in the Block Line area, simply because of some issues with the land and the environmental issues, natural heritage features and so on in that area.”

Vrbanovic says in the meantime, we're already seeing a significant amount of growth already within our country, and it shows.

“I remember a number of years ago, there was some work done looking at the aging Baby Boomer generation and what is going to need to happen from an immigration point-of-view into the country. It was estimated that we'd need about 600,000 new Canadians every year.”

He says when it comes to the region itself though, Waterloo Region has big city amenities with a small-town feel.

“That's something that many feel a part of. It's why we focus on much of our neighbourhoods. As we go forward, as we grow, we don't lose those things that make this community a great place to live.”
