Waterloo raises its skyline with additions to high-rise developments

By Ben Eppel

Some towering residential buildings in Waterloo are going to be taller than originally planned.

City council approved amendments to the zoning by-law that will allow additional storeys to be added to proposed residential towers at 145 Columbia Street West.

That will see those structures rise from the proposed 20 storeys to 23 storeys.

The development will now include an additional 100 one-bedroom units thanks to the amendment, and will include a contribution to the City's affordable housing grant program. Those towers will add 535 units of housing to the city with 545 bedrooms, along with some street level retail space.

Council has also approved an addition to 316 King Street North, an existing 10-storey structure that will be reconfigured into a 14 storey structure, adding 81 units and 141 bedrooms.

The current building has just 25 units and 123 bedrooms, which will eventually become 42 units and 52 bedrooms. Parking is expected to be less of a headache with a two storey structure attached to the existing 10 storey apartment building.

In the end, that location will have 123 units and 193 bedrooms.
