Loblaw Companies Limited's own trucks won't be doing runs from the company's distribution centre on Maple Grove Road in Cambridge in a few months.
As a result, 150 workers received layoff notices on Tuesday.
The company says the decision is tied to a contract that is ending.
“We did not make this decision lightly. The vast majority of our transportation operations are run by third parties, and we believe this makes the most sense for our business and our teams in this case. Catherine Thomas, Senior Director of External Communication at Loblaw Companies Ltd., said in an emailed statement to 570 NEWS.
“To be clear, this doesn't mean there will be less work from this site for local truckers, it means that we will rely on trucking companies to support this work.” Thomas added.
The change takes effect on March 7.
