Region’s first outdoor community fridge officially opens

Organizers have opened new doors — new refrigerator doors to be exact — to help those in need in our community.
Inside the fridge are a number of fresh food items, like potatoes, fruit, breakfast spreads, and many other daily use items.
Sarah Pharaon of Community Fridge KW said the new community fridge can be accessed 24/7 by anyone.
“There are no questions asked. Anyone can drop by and use anything they want from the fridge. Anyone can also donate food, it just has to be not spoiled. It has to be either non-perishable or fresh food. We don't accept cooked meals.”
She said volunteers helped build a protective wooden shelter around the outdoor community fridge, so that it can operate through the winter.
“It actually took us four days over a few weeks. We had a lot of help from our volunteers. It just brought everyone together and it made me so happy to see that so many people want to help.”
Pharaon said anyone can access the fridge at any time — no questions asked.
“I think it's very much needed because during the pandemic, people lost their jobs. So many people don't have enough funds to support themselves. I think the more resources we have to help support people, the better it is.”
The community fridge is located outside the Full Circle Food store on Charles Street in Kitchener.
