Tragedy struck the waters of Lake Erie on Thursday afternoon.

Niagara Regional Police were called to a possible drowning in the Sherkston Beach area of Port Colborne.

Two men and four kids were in the water, but they were swept into distress by waves reaching as high as 6-feet.

Three community members saw the struggle and were able to rescue one of the men and all of the children.

Lifeguards heard the calls for help and attemped to rescue the other man, but they reportedly lost sight of him.

Search efforts were called off after a few hours due to thunder and lightning.

The man in his 30s is presumed to have drowned. Police said he's from Waterloo but no name has been released.

The Niagara Police Marine Unit will be out in the water again on Friday to continue recovery efforts.
